The European T20 Premier League (ETPL) has reached a pivotal milestone with the conclusion of its first-ever Player Draft. Six franchises have now assembled their foundation rosters, selecting a total of 36 players—consisting of 12 representatives each from Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB).
The talent distribution reflected regional strengths: Dutch players were primarily selected by the Amsterdam Flames and Rotterdam Dockers, while the Edinburgh Castle Rockers and Glasgow Cosmic secured nine of the 12 Scottish representatives. The Dublin Guardians and Belfast Wolves combined to claim seven of the Irish selections.
Among the marquee moves, the Rotterdam Dockers used their first pick to acquire Jai Moondra, an emerging Irish all-rounder who gained significant attention for his bowling during the T20I series against India. To further solidify their roster, the Dockers drafted Jasper Davidson from Scotland alongside Netherlands internationals Michael Levitt, Ryan Klein, Vikramjit Singh, and Saqib Zulfiqar.
The Belfast Wolves focused on a blend of stability and youth, securing veteran Ireland international Paul Stirling and promising left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys.
Dublin Guardians Captain and Mentor R Ashwin detailed the team’s strategic approach, emphasizing utility over nationality. “While the majority of our picks were Irish, nationality is secondary to quality and fit,” Ashwin stated. “Every single player we select must be a playable resource. They need to display exciting skills, but more importantly, they must be functional. If a player becomes unavailable, we need someone who can step in and fill that role seamlessly.”
Rotterdam Dockers Co-Owner Jonty Rhodes expressed excitement over the acquisition of Moondra, noting, “Jai was someone we were particularly keen to bring in after the way he announced himself on the international stage. He is an exciting young talent with tremendous potential. Alongside Jai, we’ve assembled a balanced group from Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands that we believe has the depth and quality to be highly competitive.”

The draft represents a significant step forward for the ETPL, with the franchises backed by a prestigious group of cricket icons, including Rahul Dravid, Steve Waugh, Matthew Hayden, Faf du Plessis, Heinrich Klaasen, Glenn Maxwell, and Jonty Rhodes.
Glenn Maxwell, Co-Owner of the Irish Wolves, shared his experience of building a team from the ground up. “It’s been a great experience navigating the risk management process and building a squad that can be truly competitive. I’m incredibly happy with the draft; we secured the specific playing skills and depth we needed,” Maxwell remarked.
Amsterdam Flames Co-Owner Steve Waugh commented on the tactical nature of the draft sequence: “The first few choices were exactly who we wanted. After that, we had to think on our feet and improvise based on other teams’ picks. Being the first team in the sequence means there is a significant gap between selections, so we were coordinating offline to ensure our next moves were precise.”
With rosters now finalized, attention shifts to the league’s debut season, which aims to elevate the profile of cricket in Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands by pairing emerging talents with established international stars.
