BRUSSELS — The European Union rolled out sweeping new sanctions on Monday, targeting nearly 1,600 Russian individuals and entities tied closely to the nation’s defense industrial base, with a specific focus on suppliers of drone and missile components.
This massive expansion, the largest single package since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began nearly five years ago, also encompasses 77 individuals implicated in orchestrating, managing, or participating in what the bloc describes as illegitimate elections in occupied Ukrainian territories.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized that over half of the newly sanctioned entities are integral to the supply chain for ballistic missiles, which she stated are used by Russian forces to target Ukrainian civilians on a daily basis.
