A towering statue of the Virgin Mary was officially unveiled in the small Polish village of Konotopie during a ceremony attended by hundreds of faithful and dignitaries.
At 55.6 metres, the monument is believed to be the tallest depiction of the Virgin Mary in Europe. The inauguration featured a Catholic Mass, traditional Polish music, and helicopters scattering red rose petals over the gathering.
Former Polish president and Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa attended the event, describing the statue as the culmination of a journey rooted in his Catholic faith. The monument was commissioned by local residents Roman and Grażyna Karkosik as an expression of gratitude to God. Local authorities anticipate the site will draw both pilgrims and tourists.
