Exclusive: The Truth Behind Nigel McGuinness’s Legitimate Foot Injury in the AEW Continental Challenge Cup

The foot injury sustained by Nigel McGuinness, which became a central narrative throughout the Continental Challenge Cup, was genuine.

In the tournament final at AEW All In on Sunday at Wembley Stadium, McGuinness succumbed to an ankle lock applied by Jon Moxley. Bryan Alvarez noted that McGuinness’s foot was indeed injured during the tournament.

Alvarez commented:

“So as it turns out, Nigel legit hurt his foot in the tournament and they turned it into a storyline to get through to Wembley.”

McGuinness sustained the injury during his opening‑round bout against Katsuyori Shibata at the August 12 AEW Collision taping, which aired on August 15. He then advanced by defeating Hechicero in the quarterfinals on the August 19 episode of Dynamite in Baltimore, and followed that with a win against Kyle O’Reilly in the semifinals on the August 26 Dynamite broadcast from Glasgow, Scotland.

The Moxley versus McGuinness bout lasted 17 minutes and 12 seconds, with Moxley’s AEW Continental Championship also at stake throughout the tournament.
