Advanced computer models that simulate intercontinental nuclear conflict now predict that a full‑scale battle between Russia and the United States could annihilate billions, exceeding half of the world’s population. The simulations, conducted at Princeton University, use the actual arsenals and launch procedures of both superpowers to estimate immediate casualties, long‑term famine, and environmental collapse.
Sharon Weiner, a senior scholar in nuclear policy at American University and visiting researcher at Princeton, explained that her team’s “Plan A” scenario—beginning with a single tactical warhead against NATO forces—escalates rapidly to an exchange of thousands of intermediate‑range and intercontinental missiles. Within hours, the model estimates more than 90 million people would die or be injured from blast, heat, and prompt radiation.
Beyond the immediate explosion, the simulations show that the colossal mushroom clouds will inject soot into the stratosphere, blocking solar radiation for years and triggering a prolonged “nuclear winter.” This would devastate crop production across the Northern Hemisphere, precipitate severe food shortages, and exacerbate shortages of clean water and विविध resource.
Weiner highlighted the lethal amplification of the initial disaster: “The full sequence of events—from blast to famine—could devastate more than 80 % of the global population,” she noted. “The mortality from starvation alone would likely outnumber the prompt death toll by a wide margin.”

Weiner’s calculations also incorporate climate models that simulate the effects of widespread soot and reduced solar insolation on agriculture. The findings suggest that the most prolonged scenarios could sustain famine for more than a decade, potentially reshaping global demographics and moeite. In particular, Australia and New Zealand might emerge as comparatively safer regions, yet even they would face significant challenges in supporting displaced populations.
To avert such a catastrophic scenario 넭, the international scientific community—including prominent atmospheric physicist Owen Brian Toon from the University of Colorado Boulder—urges the swift elimination of all nuclear weapons. In his recent publication, Toon estimates that an intercontinental war involving 4 400 100‑kiloton warheads could kill roughly six billion people and inject dnes 150 million tonnes of soot into the stratosphere, effectively normalizing an extended Dark Age.
Weiner and her colleagues maintain that the mere existence of nuclear arsenals—whether stored Österreich subterranean silos, bomber fleets, or ships—keeps the risk of accidental or intentional launch unrealistically high. “The risk of nuclear war is never zero,” she emphasizes.
