Although the extended international break was introduced with player welfare as a stated objective, the on-ground reality suggests otherwise, with numerous footballers set to return to their clubs carrying new injuries.

Determining whether the past fortnight yielded a higher injury tally than previous windows is difficult, especially given the extended duration and increased number of fixtures. A rigorous comparison may only be possible once the season concludes and all international interruptions are complete.

Nonetheless, a series of injuries has emerged since squads were convened.

On Monday, Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott withdrew from the England squad suffering a thigh injury, a move that drew criticism from the club regarding England’s handling of the situation.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland requested substitution during the 67th minute, subsequently limping off during Norway’s fixture against Portugal on Sunday before leaving camp. Club teammate Nico O’Reilly also returned to City for further assessment.

Following Haaland’s departure, the Norwegian players’ union (NISO) raised concerns about escalating demands.

“Over time, we have seen a worrying trend where the burden on top players has become far too high,” NISO chief Kristoffer Vatshaug said.

“We want clearer guidelines for workload and recovery. It is about the time between matches, consecutive rest periods, travel strain and how much time players get to recover after a long season.”

Liverpool duo Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak have both sustained injuries; Gakpo exited the Netherlands squad with an ankle problem, while Isak withdrew from Sweden duty due to a minor thigh injury.

Portugal manager Jorge Jesus revealed that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes had been competing through pain, while Sunderland’s Dan Ballard and Brian Brobbey both sustained hamstring issues.

Club managers remain hopeful that no further names are added to this list, with three matches still to be played.

Earlier, before the break commenced, England’s Tino Livramento, Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, and Declan Rice had all been withdrawn from Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Beyond the Premier League, prominent international stars were also affected, including Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe, who sustained an injury with France, and Barcelona’s Raphinha, who returned from Brazil with a thigh injury.
