Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Sandro Tonali exclusively pursued a move to Tottenham this summer, despite media speculation linking the midfielder with Arsenal and Manchester City.
Fabrizio Romano: Tonali’s Preference Was Tottenham from the Start
In a recent YouTube interview, Romano explained that rumors of interest from Arsenal and Manchester City never reflected Tonali’s true intentions.
According to the Italian journalist, Tonali gave an immediate “yes” to Tottenham after the club’s approach, citing Roberto De Zerbi’s project as the decisive factor.
“I never came here saying ‘Man City, Arsenal interest, Tonali doesn’t want to go to Tottenham,’” Romano said. “Many people claimed Tonali preferred Arsenal or Manchester City, but his preference was clear from day one.”
Romano noted that Tonali’s firm stance was evident when the exclusive story broke on 15 June. The midfielder agreed to personal terms with Spurs that afternoon, trusting De Zerbi’s tactical vision and the club’s long‑term plan.
The deal, valued at £92.5 million upfront with £7.5 million in add‑ons, was finalized after two weeks of club‑to‑club negotiations.
“Tonali agreed personal terms on 15 June with Tottenham, and the negotiation took two weeks — but now the agreement is done. It’s a record deal for Tottenham. Two days ago I told you about the record deal for [Mathys] Fernandez — that was £85 million. Now, 48 hours later, another record deal: Sandro Tonali is £92.5 million, plus £7.5 million in add‑ons. So £100 million total for Sandro Tonali to Tottenham — the most expensive Italian player in the history of the game.”
“So, Sandro Tonali to Tottenham is done, and now it’s time for the medical and the contract signing. Newcastle have accepted the proposal, and everything has been completed.”
Tonali Set to Become Tottenham’s Highest‑Paid Player
With a total package worth £100 million, Tonali not only breaks the club’s transfer‑fee record but also becomes the highest‑paid player in Tottenham’s history, earning £275,000 per week on a six‑year contract.
This substantial financial commitment reflects Tottenham’s ambition to rebuild under De Zerbi after consecutive 17th‑place finishes.
Tottenham’s Summer Transfer Activity Under De Zerbi
Tonali joins a busy transfer window that has already seen the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes (£85 million), Jan Paul van Hecke (£52 million), and free‑transfer signings Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dúbravka.
These acquisitions underscore Spurs’ intent to return to the Premier League elite for the 2026/27 season.
