Has one of Italy’s most iconic lakes completely vanished? A viral report circulating on X and TikTok, which has amassed over 600,000 views, falsely claims that Lake Como in northern Italy has run dry.
The sensationalist footage claims that a once-celebrated landscape has been transformed into a barren expanse of mud, rocks, and stranded boats. “The first images were filmed in Bellagio. You can see the water disappearing at astonishing speed, leaving jetties suspended above the void,” the narrator asserts, falsely attributing the phenomenon to a “geological rupture.”
The reality is quite different: the shocking imagery of a dried-up Lake Como is entirely fabricated through artificial intelligence.
The lake remains well-populated with water
The TikTok account @naturevsia was identified as the source of the video via its watermark. The profile’s description clarifies its content strategy: “AI News.” It functions as a fake media outlet that specializes in generating sensationalized, false content, and even includes a disclaimer stating that its videos are AI-generated.
While some users quickly identified the video as a fabrication, others were misled by the realistic visuals, including viewers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi.
Satellite data from the European Sentinel 2, as seen on the Copernicus website on August 13, confirms that Lake Como—which spans a 170-kilometer perimeter—is still full of water.
Furthermore, webcam footage from Tremezzo, located west of Bellagio, taken on August 14, shows no evidence of the receding water levels suggested by the AI-generated report.
Drought concerns for Lake Como
While the lake has not emptied due to a “geological rupture,” it is facing real challenges from drought. The local Italian outlet La Provincia di Como reported that by August 1, water levels had dropped at least 30.2cm below the hydrographic zero, approaching levels seen four years ago.
Despite these fluctuations, the lake remains a significant body of water with a maximum depth of 418 meters.
