A fraudulent notice currently circulating on social media falsely claims that the Cambodian government has ordered all African nationals to leave the country or face arrest and substantial fines.
The viral document is titled “FOR ALL AFRICAN NATIONALS IN THE KINGDOM OF CAMBODIA (GHANA, KENYA, CAMEROON, UGANDA AND OTHERS).” It purports to be an official communication from the Ministry of Interior’s General Department of Immigration, stating that a specific waiver for these nationals would officially expire on May 31, 2026.
The notice warns that any foreign nationals remaining in Cambodia after June 1 would be subject to arrest, a two-year prison sentence, and a fine of US$8,000 before being deported. It further asserts that Cambodian police would begin raids on “any hideout” to apprehend overstaying foreigners.
The document appears to be signed by “Lt Gen Som Sopheak,” identified as the Director General of the General Department of Immigration, and “Gen Sar Sokha,” identified as a Secretary of State in the Ministry of Interior.
However, an investigation into these claims reveals the notice is entirely fabricated. A review of the official Cambodian Ministry of Interior and immigration websites shows significant discrepancies in the leadership roles listed. The General Department of Immigration’s website identifies Lieutenant General Sok Veasna as the Director General, not the individual named in the notice. Furthermore, Sar Sokha is listed as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, rather than a Secretary of State.
The General Department of Immigration’s official Facebook page has explicitly flagged the circulating notice as “FAKE NEWS.”
The Ministry of Interior of the Royal Government of Cambodia categorically rejects the fabrication of this public document and the dissemination of such false information. These publications are considered a deliberate attempt to distort facts, mislead international public opinion, and damage the reputation and image of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
The Ministry clarified that Cambodia has no policy ordering African nationals to leave the country and continues to welcome all foreigners who adhere to legal immigration requirements. This confirmation was posted by both the Ministry of Interior and Sar Sokha.
The circulating notice is a hoax and should be ignored.
