Eisman, the investor popularized by The Big Short, announced he has scaled back his artificial intelligence holdings by liquidating his long-standing position in Alphabet, cautioning that the market may be underestimating the fallout if the AI expansion cannot meet its elevated promises. “I’ve lightened up. I sold my Google a couple of months ago. I’ve owned Google for a very long time,” Eisman stated during a recent appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box. “I wanted to reduce my exposure to AI.” His remarks followed a pause in the aggressive rally of technology stocks. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite endured consecutive weekly declines, dropping 0.6% and 2.1% respectively. The prior week, Alphabet, which owns Google and YouTube, experienced a nearly 8% decline after updating its capital expenditure forecast, highlighting the substantial capital needed for AI infrastructure. Eisman emphasized that he has not redirected the proceeds into defensive holdings, noting that the market remains obsessed with AI rather than safer alternatives like consumer staples. “People either want to buy AI or they don’t want to buy AI,” he remarked. “They don’t want to shift out of it to buy Clorox.” When questioned about the potential consequences of AI failing, Eisman predicted, “I think we have a big correction.” He clarified that he is not taking a bearish stance on the overall market, but rather expressing concern over extreme thematic concentration. “It’s all one trade,” he said. “Even investors who believe they are diversified—holding 60% stocks and 40% bonds—are missing the reality that they aren’t truly diversified, because over 50% of their equity allocation is tech and AI-related, and the majority of new bond issuance is AI-driven… What scares me is that it’s all one trade.” The investor concluded that he is hoarding significant cash until he determines his next move.
