New Delhi, July 18: Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Farokh Engineer has offered a moving tribute to the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers, hailing the West Indies icon as the most versatile cricketer to ever play the game. Following Sobers’ passing on Friday, the cricketing community mourns the loss of a man widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder in the history of the sport.
Engineer remarked that the loss of Sobers is a profound moment for cricket, noting that the Barbadian legend was revered not just for his peerless talent, but for his remarkable character and humility. After communicating with Sobers’ family and former West Indies pacer Wes Hall, Engineer noted that a sense of deep mourning has enveloped Barbados.
“Until this tragic day, he was the most complete cricketer to ever live. The entire cricketing world is mourning a true genius,” Engineer stated, as reported by PTI.
Reflections from a Shared Dressing Room
Reflecting on the time they spent together representing the World XI, Engineer spoke of Sobers’ unparalleled ability to master every facet of the game. The former Indian stumper emphasized that Sobers was a generational talent who excelled in batting, fast bowling, spin bowling, and exceptional close-in fielding.
While Engineer acknowledged the greatness of legendary batsmen such as Rohan Kanhai, Graham Pollock, Barry Richards, Sunil Gavaskar, and Sachin Tendulkar, he maintained that no one possessed Sobers’ comprehensive skill set. He also recalled the unique bond formed while keeping wicket to Sobers’ bowling, noting the seamless understanding they shared on the field through countless dismissals.
“He was the best at everything. His catching was superior to almost anyone. He could bowl with pace, possessed incredible swing, and was a formidable batsman. While there have been many greats—like Kanhai, Pollock, Richards, Gavaskar, and Tendulkar—none matched his total package,” Engineer added.
