A fatal collision between two passenger trains near Bedford has left one person dead and numerous others injured, causing significant disruption during the evening rush hour as emergency services worked at the scene.
East Midlands Railway identified the involved services as the 4:40 pm from Corby to St Pancras and the 3:50 pm from Nottingham to London St Pancras. Air ambulance helicopters were deployed to the site of the accident, which occurred south of the Elstow interchange between the A421 and the A6.
Local medical facilities were placed on high alert, with reports indicating that Bedford hospital staff were advised to prepare for up to 50 casualties. Consequently, the public was urged to avoid emergency departments unless facing a critical emergency.
A spokesperson for the Rail, Maritime and Transport union expressed deep concern over the collision and the severity of the injuries sustained by both passengers and on-board staff. In response to the incident, all East Midlands Railway services to and from London St Pancras were suspended for the remainder of the night.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared his condolences on X, stating: “Hugely concerning reports of a collision involving two passenger trains near Bedford. First and foremost, my thoughts are with the family of the person who has sadly lost their life, and with those who have been seriously injured. I am grateful to the emergency services for their swift response to this tragic incident.”
Social media footage captured images of a damaged Luton Airport Express train and passengers gathered alongside the tracks. Dr. Peter Knapp, a 40-year-old passenger in the front carriage, described the harrowing moment of impact on Bluesky, stating that the train stopped instantly without warning, flinging passengers forward and filling the carriages with smoke.
“People were crying, screaming, people were so scared and confused,” Knapp recounted, explaining that he managed to squeeze through a gap in the doors to escape. He described seeing others with life-threatening and major injuries, including broken limbs and disorientation, while noting that his own injuries included bloodied legs and severe back pain.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has dispatched a team of inspectors to the site to begin gathering evidence and determine the cause of the crash. Mohammad Yasin, the MP for Bedford and Kempston, expressed his profound sorrow regarding the incident.
One of the trains involved was an East Midlands Railway Aurora, a new model that entered service last year.
