According to Israeli emergency services, a munitions explosion near the northern border with Lebanon resulted in one fatality and approximately 20 injuries, several of them serious. The blast occurred near Mitzpe Be’er as a group of students and teachers participated in an annual school trip. Preliminary findings from Israeli media indicate that an individual may have handled the explosive object and placed it in a bag before it detonated. Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency medical service, responded to the scene after receiving an emergency call, treating the injured on site. A total of fourteen ambulances and three rescue helicopters were dispatched to the area. Earlier reports from Israeli news outlet Walla stated that the military and police had previously declared the area clear of explosives, with the blast attributed to an old Iran-backed Hezbollah rocket. Lebanese authorities monitored the incident through Israeli media reports, with a Lebanese military source noting there was no Lebanese army presence near the site and uncertainty over whether the explosion occurred inside Lebanese territory occupied by Israel or outside it. Additionally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu interrupted a live social media broadcast related to the election following the event.
