Five individuals were injured, one critically, in a shooting at Virginia State University involving multiple suspects, according to the university’s statement.
Law enforcement arrived at a residence hall around 01:28 local time (05:28 GMT) on Saturday.
Five people with gunshot wounds were transported to local hospitals. Four of the injuries were not life-threatening.
Authorities did not immediately confirm arrests. The BBC has sought comments from local police.
The campus lockdown has been lifted, though a substantial law enforcement presence remains on site, as confirmed by the university.
The investigation is being led by Chesterfield County Police, with support from local and campus authorities.
Virginia State University (VSU), home to approximately 5,000 students, is located about 20 miles south of Richmond, Virginia’s capital. It is also recognized as one of the nation’s historically black colleges and universities.
These institutions were established to provide higher education to African Americans, who were previously excluded from most colleges.
Per the university’s website, the new academic term began on Monday, and dormitories opened for returning students on Friday.
