At least one person has died and another has been critically injured following a shooting at a popular entertainment district in California, which has been serving as a World Cup “fan zone,” according to local authorities.
Although the area is a hub for football celebrations, no matches were being broadcast at the time the incident occurred on Sunday.
“One victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries,” the San Jose Police Department stated in a post on X.
“This incident is being investigated as a homicide. Several surrounding streets remain closed in the area.”
The shooting took place at San Pedro Square, one of several locations in the San Francisco Bay Area where crowds have been congregating to view World Cup matches on large outdoor screens.
