U.S. law enforcement officials announced Tuesday that they have successfully thwarted a conspiracy to attack the White House during a high-profile mixed martial arts event attended by President Donald Trump.
“Multiple individuals are now in custody, and the planned attacks were stopped cold,” FBI Director Kash Patel stated.
The Department of Justice has filed charges against five men, detailing a plot to deploy explosive-laden drones over the venue. The objective was to trigger a mass evacuation, creating a window of opportunity for snipers to target “high-value targets” within the fleeing crowd.
Among those apprehended is 19-year-old Tycen Proper, who was arrested on June 10 in Ohio. His arrest followed a report from his mother, who alerted police that her son had been communicating with an extremist group online.
According to the DOJ, Proper allegedly stockpiled firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and tactical gear at his residence. He is also accused of identifying several members of Congress as potential targets.
President Trump joined thousands of spectators on Sunday for the event, which took place in a temporary arena known as “The Claw,” constructed on the South Lawn of the White House.
The White House remains one of the most secure sites globally, protected by comprehensive surveillance, perimeter fencing, checkpoints, anti-aircraft defenses, and dedicated quick-reaction forces.
“In the days leading up to this weekend, our special agents, mission support personnel, and technical security teams worked around the clock to identify those responsible and hold them accountable,” Secret Service Director Sean Curran posted on X.
Vance Attributes Plot to Left-Wing Rhetoric
The “UFC Freedom 250” event coincided with Trump’s 80th birthday and served as the opening celebration for the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
This incident follows several previous assassination attempts against the president, including an April incident where a gunman attempted to storm a White House press gala.
Vice President JD Vance, who was also in attendance, told Fox News on Tuesday morning that he had just been informed of the disrupted plot.
When questioned why the FBI chose to publicize the foiled plot—a move rarely taken due to operational security—Vance pointed to the “scale of the planned attack.”
He characterized the incident as a “coordinated planned terrorist plot” and highlighted the administration’s efforts to investigate the funding and organizational networks of radical left-wing groups.
While Vance provided no further details regarding the suspects’ specific motivations, he accused Democratic leaders of inciting violence through anti-Trump rhetoric.
“Everybody has a role to cut this stuff out, but I think a lot of my Democratic colleagues in Washington have got to look themselves in the mirror and say, ‘why is so much of this political violence coming from our side of the spectrum?'” Vance said.
The White House has frequently asserted that critics and the media are the primary drivers of increasing political tension in the U.S. Conversely, Trump’s opponents argue that the president’s own inflammatory language regarding immigrants, the electoral system, and political rivals is the root cause of the instability.
