FC Barcelona will travel to Elche on Sunday to begin their quest for a third consecutive La Liga title, a feat not achieved since the Pep Guardiola era.
The summer transfer window has brought significant changes to the squad, particularly in attack, with major departures including Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski.
While Ferran Torres has moved to Paris Saint-Germain, the veteran striker Robert Lewandowski has transitioned to Major League Soccer, joining the Chicago Fire.
Without a natural central striker on the roster aside from young prospect Hamza Abdelkarim, manager Hansi Flick will likely rely on wide players or midfielders capable of operating as false nines.
For this opening match, Flick is expected to deploy new summer signing Anthony Gordon as the central forward, supported by wingers Raphinha and Lamine Yamal on the flanks.
In the attacking midfield role, Fermin Lopez is set to start ahead of World Cup winners Gavi and Dani Olmo.
The midfield setup is especially intriguing, featuring two graduates from the Class of 2007 alongside Lamine Yamal: Xavi Espart and Marc Bernal.
Unfortunately, Pau Cubarsi’s absence prevents a complete reunion of all four highly talented graduates from that class in the starting lineup.
In defense, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen are slated to partner at center-back, with Eric Garcia starting at right-back.
The FC Barcelona Left-Back Situation Is Worth Keeping an Eye On
The left-back position remains highly contested. With Joao Cancelo only recently signing a permanent contract, he still requires time to reach full fitness, a process complicated by another new acquisition, Rodri.
Reports had previously suggested that Hansi Flick might turn to another La Masia prodigy, Jordi Pesquer. Following comments from Flick questioning Alejandro Balde’s commitment, and reports that the player decided to leave the club, Pesquer’s professional debut appeared imminent.
With Balde omitted from the squad list, Pesquer is set to start, though Barcelona may still look to the transfer market for a third option to complement the 18-year-old and Cancelo.
FC Barcelona Vs. Elche Starting XI: Garcia; Pesquer, Gerard, Christensen, Eric; Bernal, Espart; Raphinha, Fermin, Lamine; Gordon
