A federal judge has temporarily blocked the construction of a proposed monumental arch dedicated to former President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued a ruling imposing a 14-day pause on the project, which the administration had hoped to start immediately following recent regulatory approval.
Earlier in the day, the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) voted 8-4 to approve the design for the 250-foot (72-meter) arch. Proponents, including Trump appointees on the commission, argue the monument would serve as a fitting tribute to American history and military veterans. However, opponents contend that the structure would obstruct views of Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for thousands of U.S. service members.
Colloquially dubbed the “Arc de Trump” in reference to Paris’s Arc de Triomphe, the project is part of a broader initiative to reshape the nation’s capital. The monument is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The commission’s approval followed nearly nine hours of public comments and debate during Thursday’s hearing.
In response to the commission’s green light, a White House spokesperson stated, “The White House commends the National Capital Planning Commission’s decision to fully approve President Trump’s historic vision to build a much-needed Triumphal Arch in Washington, D.C.”
With multiple lawsuits filed to challenge the project, the timeline for construction remains uncertain. The White House, however, criticized Judge Chutkan’s intervention, labeling the court an “activist district court.”
The spokesperson added, “We are confident we will be fully vindicated as this litigation proceeds and look forward to seeing the completion of this magnificent Arch.”
