June’s headline inflation decline masks broader inflationary trends affecting core metrics.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) may still raise interest rates, posing risks to high-valued equities.
The stock market has historically navigated periods of uncertainty by overcoming challenges, and 2026 has been no different. Despite geopolitical tensions from the ongoing Iran conflict, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI), S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) have surged to record levels this year. However, elevated inflation remains a critical headwind.
While June’s headline inflation report provided temporary relief, its broader implications remain uncertain. The Iran-induced disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for global oil trade, drove fuel prices to unprecedented levels. This supply shock pushed year-over-year inflation to 4.2% in May, the highest in three years. Crude oil price declines following diplomatic progress in mid-June temporarily reduced headline inflation to 3.5%, but this respite may be fleeting.

June’s Inflation Data Hides Broader Pressures
The June inflation report’s apparent improvement centered on temporary energy price declines. While crude oil futures dropped sharply, this did not fully offset persistent core inflation driven by non-energy components. Notably, the Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index—the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge—held steady at 3.4% in May, far above the 2% target. This suggests that inflationary pressures extend beyond geopolitical oil disruptions into labor costs, supply chains, and wage growth. Federal Reserve officials have long prioritized broadening inflation indicators over headline figures when setting monetary policy.
About an hour and 40 minutes into this hearing, someone asked Kevin Warsh about the June CPI:
“It’s one data point…. I don’t want to overread or cherry pick data.”
“There might be some who look at this morning’s data and say, ‘Well, mission accomplished, everything is swell.’…

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking to the House Financial Services Committee, cautioned against premature optimism. Citing the Fed’s prolonged struggle with inflation, he stated, “There might be some who look at this morning’s data and say, ‘Well, mission accomplished, everything is swell.’ That is not my view.” Warsh’s hawkish stance, reflected in his prior voting record, underscores a preference for proactive rate hikes to anchor long-term inflation expectations. His remarks signal that the Fed remains prepared to tighten monetary policy if core inflation persists.
BREAKING: US May PCE inflation, the Fed’s preferred inflation metric, rises to 4.1%, the highest reading since April 2023.
Core PCE inflation rose to 3.4%, its highest since October 2023.
US inflation is now officially running at more than double the Fed’s 2% target.

Persistent, broad-based inflation poses significant challenges for the Fed, as it requires comprehensive policy tools beyond energy market interventions. The current environment of elevated equity valuations—driven by AI-driven growth expectations and low borrowing costs—could face downward pressure if interest rates rise. Companies heavily reliant on debt financing, particularly in capital-intensive sectors like AI infrastructure, may experience slower expansion ahead of renewed market corrections. Investors should monitor Fed communications closely as the committee balances growth risks against inflationary momentum.
