With the WNBA playoffs rapidly approaching, the Indiana Fever look to recover from back-to-back defeats when they face the Chicago Sky on Sunday in what promises to be a pivotal contest.
While the Fever have secured their postseason berth and are competing for favorable seeding, the Sky remain in the hunt for the final playoff spot. Chicago has quietly built momentum with three straight victories, including back-to-back home wins that have kept their slim postseason aspirations alive.
Indiana (24-14) demonstrated offensive firepower in Saturday’s 109-102 loss to the New York Liberty, shooting 57.1% overall and 42.3% from beyond the arc. However, uncharacteristic free throw struggles—making just 11-of-22 attempts—proved costly in the defeat.
The team’s core trio of Kelsey Mitchell, Caitlin Clark, and Aliyah Boston combined for 68 points, yet their collective 9-for-16 performance at the charity stripe, including Clark’s 1-of-3 showing in the final minute, ultimately doomed their efforts. Despite a Mitchell three-pointer that tied the game at 100, Indiana surrendered the decisive seven-point stretch to fall short.
“It’s playoff basketball and there has to be urgency every single possession,” Indiana coach Stephanie White emphasized following the game.
White identified consistency as the Fever’s primary challenge, noting, “We had some really solid defensive possessions, but there were also noticeable lapses throughout the game.”
For Chicago (15-22), their 73-70 victory over the Golden State Valkyries on Friday showcased their resilience. Rookie guard Sydney Taylor has emerged as a clutch performer, drilling a game-winning three-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining to secure the win. Her 14-point contribution, highlighted by a 4-for-6 three-point performance, exemplified the Sky’s balanced offensive approach.
“She’s proven time and time again that she’s built for those crucial moments,” Sky coach Tyler Marsh said of Taylor. “This team has consistently shown we can rise to the occasion when it matters most.”
Natasha Cloud led the Sky with 17 points, while center Kamilla Cardoso recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot contributed 12 points and five assists as Chicago limited Golden State to just 35.7% shooting.
“I felt we did an excellent job of making them work for every shot,” Marsh commented on his team’s defensive execution.
With seven games remaining in the regular season, Chicago sits six games behind the eighth-place Dallas Wings in the playoffrace, making their upcoming matchup with Indiana particularly significant for both teams.
