FIFA has handed Qatari player Assim Madibo a five-match suspension following a tackle that caused a leg fracture for Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone during the World Cup.

The incident occurred during Canada’s dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver last Thursday, where Madibo was shown a straight red card for the challenge.

The suspension effectively ends Madibo’s tournament, ruling him out of Qatar’s remaining fixtures, including a recent 3-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina at Seattle Stadium.

According to the FIFA disciplinary committee, the ban was issued on Wednesday for “serious foul play.” The decision remains subject to appeal.

Canada’s historic first World Cup win was marred by the severity of Kone’s injury. The midfielder was stretchered off the field and subsequently underwent surgery to repair a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg.

The injury occurred in the 51st minute after a tackle from behind. The gravity of the situation was immediately apparent as Kone lay on the pitch in visible distress. Despite the pain, Kone attempted to reassure the cheering crowd with a wave as he was transported off the pitch.

In a poignant moment, Nathan Saliba—who replaced Kone and scored Canada’s fourth goal—celebrated by holding up a replica of Kone’s number eight shirt toward the sidelines.

Madibo was visibly distraught following the incident, seen weeping on the pitch as his teammates offered support.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch later confirmed that Madibo visited Kone’s dressing room after the match to offer a personal apology.

Sharing his gratitude on Instagram, Kone wrote: “You can’t even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers.”

In a show of diplomacy and sportsmanship, Madibo and Qatar’s sports minister visited the injured player to check on his recovery. The Qatar Football Association stated that they were received by the President of the Canadian Soccer Association, noting that the visit “reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong relationships on and off the field.”

The association shared images of the meeting, including a photo of a wheelchair-bound Kone hugging Madibo, both wearing their respective national team kits.

Kone returned to BC Place in Vancouver on Wednesday to cheer on his teammates from the sidelines, though Canada ultimately fell 2-1 to Switzerland.

While significant, Madibo’s ban is not the harshest in tournament history. In 2014, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez received a nine-match suspension and a four-month ban from all football activities for biting Giorgio Chiellini. Similarly, in 1994, Italy’s Mauro Tassotti was banned for eight matches following an elbow to Spain’s Luis Enrique.
