FIFA investigates Argentine players over post‑final violence

FIFA has launched an investigation into the violent incidents that erupted after Spain’s victory in Sunday’s World Cup final, which could result in suspensions for several Argentine players.

Nahuel Molina seemed to strike Spain’s captain Rodri in the stomach as he entered the pitch after the final whistle, while a large scuffle also occurred on the halfway line. Leandro Paredes appeared to grab Eric García by the throat and threw Gavi to the ground.

Paredes was shown a red card by referee Slavko Vincic, who had already sent off Enzo Fernández towards the end of regular time, in addition to booking three other Argentine players and head coach Lionel Scaloni.

Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate possible breaches of the FDC regarding the post‑match incidents, FIFA said in a statement.

FIFA is also probing Argentina’s conduct from their semi‑final victory over England, where players celebrated with a banner reading “The Malvinas are Argentine,” which supporters had smuggled into the Atlanta Stadium.

FIFA forbids players or teams from making political statements; therefore, those involved could face bans.
