A 15-year-old boy survived for days atop a capsized skiff in Alaska’s frigid Bering Sea before being rescued by a fishing vessel, according to the US Coast Guard.
The teen’s brother and cousin died after the small boat capsized, rescuers said.
Their bodies were discovered after the teenager was hoisted to safety near St. Lawrence Island, a remote Alaskan island located closer to Russia than to the United States.
The captain of the fishing vessel The Northwest Explorer reported that the boy clung to the skiff for nearly three days. ‘That’s one tough kid,’ Adam White told KTUU-TV in Anchorage.
Coast Guard planes and helicopters initiated a search for the skiff on Monday morning after family members reported the three individuals missing the previous night. Authorities have not released the victims’ names.
The group departed St. Lawrence Island on Friday and had planned to return early Sunday, the Coast Guard said.
