A major fire at a construction site in central Brussels has resulted in multiple fatalities, local authorities confirmed Tuesday.
The incident occurred at the Oxy Tower, a high-rise building currently under construction, with the cause of the blaze remaining undetermined. At least six individuals are reported missing following the emergency.
Firefighters who responded to the scene discovered that the fire had spread to the building’s lift shafts, trapping two elevators. One elevator was deliberately opened, revealing multiple victims, according to Brecht Speybrouck, spokesperson for the Brussels Labour Prosecutor’s Office.
Speybrouck stated, “It could be the six missing people, but there may also be additional casualties in the second lift or other areas of the building.” Authorities are preparing to recover victims’ remains once the site is rendered safe, though heavy debris has complicated operations, potentially prolonging the process for several hours.
Brussels Mayor Philippe Close praised the emergency services for their “exceptional efforts” amid “particularly challenging conditions.” Prime Minister Bart De Wever and King Philippe of the Belgians were present at the scene later that afternoon, as reported by RTBF.
Local reports indicate two individuals were hospitalized with severe burns, while one firefighter received on-site treatment for heat exposure.
The Oxy Tower, designed to feature residential units, a hotel, and dining venues, is located approximately 500 meters (0.3 miles) from the Grand Place, Brussels’ historic central square.
