A 33‑year‑old man was taken into custody as flames consumed Adolf Hitler’s Alpine retreat, the Eagle’s Nest, late Friday night.
Located high above Berchtesgaden, the Kehlsteinhaus—commonly called the Eagle’s Nest—was among several structures in the region employed by Hitler and his inner circle during World War II.
The site also served as a setting for Nazi propaganda films that depicted Hitler as a nature and animal enthusiast.
Local news outlets reported that the site has been largely destroyed, and visitors have been advised to stay away.
