Hundreds of Spanish firefighters deployed to combat a growing wildfire near the scenic Costa Brava in Catalonia on Friday, as Portugal simultaneously mobilized international resources to address spreading forest blazes in its northern regions.
In Catalonia, airplanes dropped water and firefighters worked to contain flames that had spread across several districts. The focus of operations was near Tossa de Mar municipality. Emergency services reported the deployment of six planes to support ground teams. No emergencies have been reported, however, nearby areas have been evacuated.
In Portugal, communities in northern districts have been cut off due to wildfires spreading in mountainous areas. Portugal requested to expand its firefighting capabilities using the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Sweden, Italy, Greece and France are due to send support with aircraft and ground personnel.
