TEMASCALCINGO, Mexico — A pyrotechnic explosion ripped through a town in Mexico State during a patron saint festival, toppling a wall and leaving at least 10 dead and 64 others injured, authorities reported.
The blast struck Saturday night near the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church in Temascalcingo, a central Mexican municipality of roughly 66,000 inhabitants. Hundreds had gathered for a fireworks show as part of the religious celebration when the explosion erupted.
The town lies approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Mexico City.
Investigators have yet to determine the cause; the Mexico State Attorney General’s Office has launched an inquiry into the incident.
A local bishop confirmed that two priests were among those hurt.
Social media footage captured the aftermath, showing dozens of people navigating smoke and rubble as they searched for survivors.
Fireworks-related incidents are relatively common in Mexico, where the devices are a staple of street fairs and religious observances. Nearly four years ago, a similar explosion in a village in the municipality of Huejutla, in the central state of Hidalgo, injured 17 people.
