The Brooklyn Bridge experienced a brief flare-up of flames during a Fourth of July fireworks display on Saturday evening.
Video footage captured multiple small fires igniting on the bridge shortly after the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Show commenced in New York City, just after 9 p.m. Authorities confirmed no injuries were reported.
A New York Times photographer in Manhattan observed billowing flames rising from at least four locations along the bridge’s pedestrian walkway, specifically where fireworks were being launched. As the fireworks display concluded, a water truck arrived to extinguish the flames.
Following the conclusion of the fireworks show, the flashing red lights of emergency vehicles were visible in the center of the Brooklyn Bridge.
The Police Department received a call regarding a fire on the bridge at 9:32 p.m., reiterating that no injuries had been reported. Officials stated that the fires were “very likely” ignited by the Fourth of July fireworks.
By shortly after 10 p.m., officials reported that the fires had been brought under control and appeared to be extinguished.
The bridge remained closed to vehicular traffic shortly before 10:30 p.m., with emergency vehicles obstructing all lanes. An officer stationed at the bridge entrance confirmed pedestrian access was also prohibited. By shortly before 11 p.m., several emergency vehicles had begun to depart the scene.
Sharanika Akter, a 33-year-old resident of Queens, had come to the area with her husband to view the fireworks display over the Brooklyn Bridge.
“Nobody panicked,” Akter recalled, describing the scene on Old Fulton Street. “However, many spectators continued recording as smoke began to rise from the bridge.”
“Honestly, we were all quite relaxed,” Akter added. “From my vantage point on the ground, the flames appeared relatively minor.”
Llurate Cekaj, who had traveled from the Bronx to Lower Manhattan in hopes of finding a clear viewing spot for the fireworks, intended to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge with her daughter, Kledisa, to enjoy the evening. However, police officials barred them from crossing due to the ongoing fire response.
“I had hoped to take a walk tonight; the weather is lovely,” said Ms. Cekaj, 39. “Unfortunately, our efforts were in vain.”
Her 14-year-old daughter, Kledisa, expressed her disappointment, stating, “I’m really let down.”
