Melania Trump, the US First Lady, emphasized the need for a lasting truce in Ukraine during a high-level meeting with Russian and Ukrainian officials. She detailed her involvement in reviewing demining plans, aerial images, and infrastructure assessments, including roadways, evacuation routes, hospital access, vehicles, and medical resources, as part of ceasefire coordination efforts.

“Last week in Oleshky and neighbouring areas of Kherson, people experienced the simple joys of life for the first time since 2022,” Trump stated. “They walked down familiar streets without fear of explosions,” highlighting the positive impact of recent de-escalation measures.

In her remarks, Trump expressed gratitude to both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin for their cooperation, without addressing the war’s origins. The conflict, initiated by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread displacement.

Dmitriev, a Kremlin special envoy and businessman involved in previous peace talks, commended Trump’s efforts, saying she had “saved and touched so many lives.” He urged continued humanitarian collaboration, emphasizing collective action to support affected communities.

During the meeting, Dmitriev presented Trump with a framed drawing by an 11-year-old evacuee from Oleshky, symbolizing the human cost of the war. He also praised her initiatives in reuniting children separated from their families, including those allegedly abducted by Russian forces.

Arakhamia, a Ukrainian MP and key figure in Zelensky’s party, described the Oleshky ceasefire as the “biggest de-escalation since 2022.” He noted that the agreement was fostering momentum for peace, with both sides learning the mechanics of maintaining stability.

Arakhamia acknowledged the complexities of the political negotiations but reported that Ukrainians were urging Trump to continue her diplomatic efforts, seeking new missions to further de-escalate the conflict.

At the conclusion of the event, Trump delivered letters to Dmitriev and Arakhamia for hand-delivery to their respective presidents, underscoring her direct role in facilitating communication.

The White House later announced that Trump had invited her guests to view two historic artifacts, personally chosen as symbols of peace. These included an 18th-century medicine chest salvaged from the White House after the British burned it in 1812, representing the eventual US-UK alliance, and a cup gifted in 1899 to the French ambassador for mediating the Spanish-American War.

Despite Trump’s typically discreet approach to foreign policy, the specifics of her involvement in coordinating the ceasefire remain unclear. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv have provided detailed insights into the nature or scope of her contributions, which have supported the war’s most extensive truce to date.

A regional government source in Kherson confirmed that evacuation efforts in Oleshky had been underway for nearly a year, indicating long-term planning behind the recent humanitarian actions.
