Police reported that five individuals were shot dead at a youth welfare facility in a northern German town.
The motive for the Monday incident in Stade, near Hamburg’s port, remained unclear, according to a police spokesperson. Authorities have taken two individuals into custody, including the suspected shooter.
The number of injured persons is unknown, the spokesperson noted, and all five victims were adults.
Police think the shooting took place at a youth welfare center in the town of roughly 50,000 residents, situated west of Hamburg. The area, a cobbled, tree‑lined street lined with red‑brick homes, was sealed off, with forensic investigators and plain‑clothes officers present.
Initially, police urged residents to stay away, but later confirmed there was no broader threat to the public.
A witness observed a man and a woman attempting to flee in a car, only to be stopped by police, according to Focus Online.
Mass shootings are uncommon in Germany compared with the United States, though several high‑profile incidents have occurred. In 2023, a gunman in Hamburg killed six people before taking his own life at a Jehovah’s Witness place of worship. In 2016, an 18‑year‑old German‑Iranian man obsessed with mass shootings murdered at least nine people in Munich.
