Five individuals were fatally shot during what authorities describe as an apparent murder-suicide at a private residence in Georgia on Friday.
The victims were family members residing together at the home in Douglas, a city in southern Georgia.
Chief Brannen Pruette of the Douglas Police Department stated at a news conference on Saturday that officers were dispatched later Friday following reports of an active shooter. One of the victims is believed to have placed the initial emergency call.
Responding officers located four deceased adults inside the property. A fifth individual was transported to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Specific details regarding the sequence of events remain unclear, as has not yet been confirmed who opened fire.
Hours before the shooting, a female victim contacted police to report that her husband was “killing her” with his smoking habit. She was transported by EMS to a local medical center prior to the incident.
Police officials provided no further information, citing an ongoing investigation.
“We recognize the profound impact this loss has on those closest to the victims in our community. We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the family and allow them the time and space they need to grieve,” Pruette said.
Charlie Davis, the Douglas city manager, indicated this marked the area’s second murder-suicide within three months.
“Domestic violence doesn’t know race. It doesn’t know religion. It doesn’t know geographic location,” Davis said. “We encourage everyone to refrain from speculation and allow the family the space, dignity and compassion they deserve during this time.”
In a separate recent incident of violence, a man in Pennsylvania fatally shot several family members on Friday before taking his own life.
