Font Unveils New LP American Bully XL, Shares Lead Track “Texas”

When Font was named a Band To Watch two years ago, their sound was categorized as dance-punk, though that label no longer fits their latest material. “Texas” serves as the lead single from the Austin-based group’s forthcoming album American Bully XL, arriving as the successor to 2024’s Strange Burden. The track is a shimmering, stuttering reverie that bears strong similarities to Hovvdy, another project with roots in Austin.

The foundation for American Bully XL was laid during a trip to California, where the band worked at Dutch Interior’s Long Beach studio. During their time away from home, the Kerr County Flood had a devastating impact on their community. Frontman Thom Waddill elaborated:

Pretty much everyone I know from home was just one or two degrees away from someone who lost a loved one in the flood. So the state was on our minds when we came up with the initial idea together in one of our final improv sessions in the Long Beach studio. The file of the idea that we passed around for months was just called “Texas.” I was intimidated by writing a song with that title. It wasn’t until I moved up to Brooklyn months later that I found the chords and lyrics to put on top of it. I was listening to a lot of country, like a lot of people do after they move away from Texas. There’s a lot of Lyle Lovett in this song.
