Former England centre‑back Chris Smalling is in advanced talks with Portuguese champions Porto.
Smalling has been a free agent since departing Saudi Pro League side Al‑Fayha at the end of last season.
The 36‑year‑old was previously linked with a move to Rangers, but those talks did not result in a transfer.
Nevertheless, negotiations with Porto are progressing and are understood to be at an advanced stage, though a final agreement has yet to be sealed.
Porto remain unbeaten this campaign, having won all seven league fixtures and currently hold a five‑point lead over second‑placed Benfica.
Francesco Farioli’s Porto suffered a home defeat to Manchester City in their opening Champions League match.
Smalling, aged 36, is eager to extend a 19‑year professional career that began at non‑league Maidstone, followed by spells at Fulham, Manchester United – where he collected five major trophies, including two Premier League titles – and Roma, where he lifted the UEFA Conference League under José Mourinho in 2022.
He has also earned 31 caps for England.
