Former Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Faces Asset Concealment Charges

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been formally charged with failing to disclose assets valued at tens of millions of dollars, making him the third former leader of the country to face criminal proceedings after departing from office.

The 66-year-old appeared at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Thursday, where he entered a not guilty plea to charges alleging that he neglected to provide a full asset declaration to Malaysia’s anti-corruption authority.

Prosecutors accuse him of concealing holdings valued at approximately $40 million, denominated across nine different currencies, along with gold and silver bars.

Speaking at a press briefing, his attorney, Amer Hamzah Arshad, characterized the charge as fundamentally a matter of non-compliance with a directive requiring the declaration of specific assets.

“We will be reviewing the charge thoroughly, and as we conveyed to the court, we are raising specific concerns regarding the propriety and legality of the charge, though we will not elaborate at this time,” he stated.

The presiding judge established bail at 300,000 ringgit (approximately $74,504) and denied a prosecution request to confiscate his passport, determining that there was no evidence suggesting he posed a flight risk.

He is scheduled to return to court on September 29. If convicted, he could face a sentence of up to five years imprisonment.

Ismail Sabri served as Prime Minister for 15 months, from August 2021 to November 2022, representing the shortest tenure of any Malaysian prime minister.

In March of the previous year, Malaysia’s anti-corruption agency announced that he had submitted an assets declaration after being instructed to do so as part of an investigation into alleged corruption and money laundering activities.

He now stands as the third former prime minister to face prosecution in recent years on charges connected to alleged corruption.

Former Prime Minister Najib Razak is currently serving a reduced six-year prison sentence following his conviction in a case linked to the multibillion-dollar embezzlement from the 1MDB state investment fund. He received an additional 15-year sentence last year in his second and most significant graft trial related to 1MDB, with additional proceedings still pending.

A third former prime minister, Muhyiddin Yassin, is presently standing trial on charges of corruption and money laundering.
