Rapper and podcast host N.O.R.E., born Victor James Santiago Jr., is facing a lawsuit alleging sexual assault stemming from an incident in 1999. The complaint, obtained by Pitchfork, was filed by Carmen Bryan, a former finance officer at Rush Management, a Def Jam affiliate.
According to the suit, the alleged assault occurred during an event promoting Santiago’s second album, Melvin Flynt – Da Hustler, at a Manhattan nightclub. Bryan alleges that Santiago forcibly digitally penetrated her in the presence of her friends and other patrons. The filing states the assault ceased only after bystanders intervened, shouting and physically pulling Santiago away.
Bryan fled the venue in distress. The lawsuit further alleges that Santiago pursued her outside, directing sexually explicit comments toward her and demanding, “Don’t you know who I am?” The complaint states Santiago only stopped upon recognizing Bryan under streetlights as the partner of rapper Nas, allegedly remarking, “Carm, I didn’t know it was you. You’re always doing something different with your hair.”
In March, Bryan’s legal team sent a pre-suit settlement demand to Santiago outlining claims of forcible touching, assault, disorderly conduct, sexual misconduct, and civil rights violations. Santiago reportedly responded by denying knowledge of Bryan.
“No woman signs up to be assaulted,” Heather Palmore, Bryan’s attorney, stated. “The assertion that an assault is excusable—or simply did not happen—because a perpetrator failed to recognize his victim strips women of their fundamental humanity. Ms. Bryan is coming forward not only to demand accountability for the lasting trauma and public humiliation inflicted upon her, but to challenge the culture of entitlement that treats women’s bodies as collateral damage.”
Pitchfork has reached out to Santiago’s legal counsel for comment.
