Texas A&M athletics announced on Thursday that former NFL linebacker Keith Mitchell has died at the age of 51. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Mitchell began his professional career in 1997 after signing with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent. He spent five seasons with the organization, highlighted by a Pro Bowl selection in 2000.
Following his tenure in New Orleans, Mitchell played for the Houston Texans in 2002 and the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003 before retiring from the league. Over the course of 94 career games, he recorded 408 tackles and 19.5 sacks.
At the collegiate level, Mitchell was a standout for Texas A&M, earning All-Southwest Conference honors in 1995 and All-Big 12 recognition in 1996. He recorded 34 sacks during his time with the Aggies, including 14.5 in his senior year, leading to his induction into the A&M Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.
