Former senator Taj Muhammad Afridi died in a fatal vehicle accident on Friday along the M-1 motorway near the Karnal Sher Khan Interchange, according to police reports.
The Motorway Police confirmed that Afridi was traveling from Islamabad to Peshawar when the incident occurred. Upon receiving reports of the crash, authorities rushed to the scene where preliminary investigations revealed a technical fault in the vehicle as the likely cause.
“Afridi was pronounced dead at the scene, while his driver sustained minor injuries,” stated Saqib Shah, spokesperson for Swabi Rescue 1122. Both were initially transported to Mardan Medical Complex.
Afridi served as a senator from March 2015 to March 2021 and previously held the position of provincial caretaker minister for relief and rehabilitation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Various officials paid tribute to the late politician, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, who expressed grief over his passing. Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani also extended condolences to the bereaved family, describing Afridi as a “sincere, dignified, and people-oriented political figure” whose contributions to public welfare and democratic processes would be remembered.
Gilani emphasized that Afridi’s work in strengthening democratic values and supporting legislative development represented a significant loss for national political circles.
