Former Red Sox All-Star Drew Pomeranz Designated for Assignment by Angels Following Decline in Performance

Veteran left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz, a former All-Star with the Red Sox, has been designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels after a significant drop in performance. After signing a $4 million contract with the Angels in 2026, Pomeranz failed to replicate his strong 2025 showing with the Chicago Cubs, where he posted a 2.17 ERA over 49 2/3 innings.

Angels manager Kurt Suzuki praised Pomeranz’s professionalism and mentorship role despite the roster move, stating that the team opted to prioritize younger pitching talent. The 37-year-old’s career includes a 4.24 ERA with Boston, where he recorded 311 strikeouts in 316 innings before overcoming injury setbacks to rejuvenate his career with the Cubs last season. The Angels’ decision underscores their strategic shift toward developmental players as they reassess their bullpen depth.
