A former teacher convicted of sexually assaulting a student has been returned to prison in Indonesia, after a BBC investigation uncovered that he had been secretly released early.

Mochamad Subchi Azal Tsani, also known as Bechi, received a seven‑year prison sentence in 2022 for sexually assaulting a female student at his father’s renowned Islamic boarding school in East Java, where he served as a teacher.

An undercover BBC investigation found that he was quietly released on parole in August 2025, having served less than half of his term. The victim, who was legally entitled to be notified, was not informed.

Upon learning that he had been returned to custody, she wept with relief.

“I hope this never happens to anyone else and that the law will be applied fairly in Indonesia,” the former student, who requested anonymity, told the BBC.

The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections told the BBC that Bechi’s release was granted due to sentence reductions permitted under existing regulations.

The BBC’s investigation triggered public outrage and prompted legislators to call for an inquiry, leading the government to launch a comprehensive review.

The review identified procedural errors that led to the revocation of his parole, and he has been returned to prison.

Immigration and Corrections Minister Agus Andrianto told the BBC that those who approved Bechi’s parole “will certainly face sanctions”.

“We want to ensure that such mistakes or irregularities do not occur again,” he said.
