Lahore: At least fourteen children died and several others were injured on Tuesday when the roof of a tuition centre in Lahore’s Kahna area collapsed, according to police.
Lahore Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran confirmed to Dawn that fourteen fatalities have been reported. The list of the deceased, released by Lahore General Hospital, indicates that eight of the victims were aged between five and sixteen years.
In a statement released at 7 p.m., Lahore Police announced that rescue operations had been completed.
The police statement further noted that two individuals, including the property owner, had been taken into custody as part of the initial investigation.
The DIG added that evidence was being gathered and that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence.
DIG Kamran indicated that the contractor who had recently constructed the house was among those arrested. He explained that part of the structure was still under construction and that labourers were present when the roof gave way.
An earlier statement from Rescue 1122 reported that the condition of the trapped children was critical.
“The children are very young, and there were two rooms in use. The ceilings collapsed and trapped the children,” Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmed told Dawn News.
The Edhi rescue service, participating in the rescue effort, reported that the roof of a residence’s room “collapsed suddenly.” Preliminary information suggested the collapsed roof had been built using TR girders.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz ordered police and district authorities to determine the roles of those responsible for the collapse and related deaths, to pursue criminal proceedings.
Lahore District Education Authority Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tariq Mahmood noted that the building housed a private tuition centre operated by a resident of the area.
Health authorities declared an emergency at the nearby Lahore General Hospital and directed senior administrators, doctors, nurses and paramedical staff to attend to the injured children without delay.
Initial reports suggested that approximately thirty to thirty‑five children were present at the site at the time of the incident.
