The visual distortions of the Mercator projection—where Greenland, northern Russia, and Antarctica appear disproportionately massive compared to the equatorial regions—are set to be phased out of French diplomatic use.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced on Friday that his ministry is abandoning the Mercator projection. This traditional method artificially inflates the size of polar regions while shrinking equatorial landmasses. In its place, France will adopt the Eckert IV projection, which offers a more precise representation of continental proportions. Under this new standard, France will appear smaller on global maps, aligning its visual scale more closely with nations like the United States and Russia.
“A map is never entirely neutral”
Speaking at the Sorbonne during the “La Fabrique de la diplomatie” event, the Foreign Minister argued that the time has come to rectify how the world is perceived through maps inherited from 16th-century Western navigators.
“A map is never entirely neutral,” Barrot remarked. “The Mercator projection, which most of us have used since childhood, depicts areas that do not correspond to their actual size. Consequently, the United States, Russia, and China take on a disproportionate visual importance compared to Africa, Latin America, or Southeast Asia.”
Barrot highlighted the extreme distortion of Greenland, noting that while it appears nearly as large as the entire African continent, it is actually comparable in size to the Democratic Republic of Congo or Algeria. “Changing the map does not change the physical world, but correcting a representation that distorts reality is an act of truth,” he emphasized.
A Global Movement Toward Cartographic Justice
France’s decision aligns with a significant shift occurring at the United Nations in New York. Shortly after the French announcement, the UN General Assembly officially moved away from the Mercator projection in favor of the Equal Earth model, a 2018 projection designed to maintain accurate continental proportions.
The non-binding resolution, titled “Correcting the map” and sponsored by Togo, received support from 164 member states. This follows the African Union’s adoption of the Equal Earth projection in March. The resolution encourages nations to adopt similar equal-area maps.
The United States was the sole country to vote against the resolution, labeling it a “radical ideological project.” This opposition specifically targeted a clause describing the correction of cartographic distortions as an “act of cognitive justice and memorial reparation.” Six nations—Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia, and Ukraine—abstained from the vote.
The UN clarified that the resolution does not ban the Mercator projection or mandate a single global standard. Instead, it encourages governments, educators, international bodies, and tech companies to utilize the Equal Earth projection or other “equal-area” maps that preserve true surface area proportions.
While France has joined this movement, it has chosen the Eckert IV projection (created in 1906) over the UN-recommended Equal Earth model. While the two projections differ slightly in how they shape landmasses, both provide a much more faithful representation of the Earth’s surface than the Mercator method.
Mercator mapping is unlikely to vanish entirely, as digital platforms like Google Maps continue to utilize versions of the projection. Furthermore, the transition in educational settings remains uncertain; Grégory, a senior history and geography teacher in Rennes, noted that while some textbooks use Eckert or Peters projections, most French classrooms still rely on Mercator maps.
