Several protesters and officers were injured, and thirty people were detained. The situation eased by early Sunday morning after police cordoned off parts of the city centre.
Hesse state premier Boris Rhein condemned the violence, calling the events shocking and promising that those responsible will face consequences.
Violence also spread to Cologne, where police used water cannons to disperse crowds, and to Berlin, where protesters attacked officers with bottles and pyrotechnics.
