Jean‑Luc Mélenchon, a French left‑wing leader, has condemned Israel’s conduct in Lebanon and urged a stronger French response. In a post on X, he asserted that Israel is invading and annexing southern Lebanon and labeled Israeli soldiers as genocidal barbarians. Referring to the Israeli‑held Beaufort Castle, he said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has flown the French‑named flag over it, reminding the world of the centuries‑old ties between France and Lebanon and asserting that France owes Lebanon support, affection, and solidarity.
Mélenchon proposes that France deploy its aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean, not the Strait of Hormuz, as a diplomatic signal to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and to demonstrate opposition to Israel’s military actions in Lebanon. He further urged the United Nations Security Council to condemn Israel and to facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territories.
In related news, France’s foreign minister announced that the country has requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting following reports that Israeli troops reached the Beaufort Castle area in southern Lebanon.
