After returning to Blackburn, Raya featured in the Championship but only secured the starting role in 2017 following the club’s relegation to League One.
His impact at Rovers was immediate and profound, playing a pivotal role in guiding the team back to the second tier.
Jayson Leutwiler, who served as Raya’s backup at Blackburn, witnessed firsthand the shot-stopping brilliance that has since become a hallmark of the Spaniard’s tenure at Arsenal.
“He was capable of making saves that would leave you thinking, ‘wow, that’s a shot he’d only save one out of ten times,'” recalled the former Canadian international.
“But when that happens four, five, or six times a season, it’s clearly no coincidence.”
Having played extensively across England’s lower divisions, Leutwiler believes the grit of those leagues provides a unique developmental advantage for goalkeepers.
“You are exposed to smaller crowds and different kinds of pressure. The leagues are difficult and more physical, requiring you to adapt constantly,” the 37-year-old explained.
“One Saturday you might be on a pristine pitch, and the next, conditions are poor with a tiny crowd. That environment builds the resilience necessary for the biggest games at any level.”
Raya’s trajectory continued upward when Brentford signed him for £3m in 2019. Five years later, following a successful loan period, Arsenal finalized a permanent deal worth £27m.
Since a humbling debut at Macclesfield, he has flourished on the world stage, contributing to Spain’s 2024 European Championship victory and helping Arsenal secure their first Premier League title in 22 years.
Now, Raya and the Gunners seek to complete a historic double in Budapest against PSG, a feat that would bring immense pride to his former teammates.
Reflecting on his character, Carden noted: “He possessed immense confidence and determination, yet he remained a fantastic teammate.”
“Everyone who worked with him during his time at Southport is thrilled for him. It’s a testament to who he is.”
“No one could have scripted this journey, which is what makes it such an inspiring story.”
