‘Frustrating’ contract talks irk Pats CB Gonzalez

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Cornerback Christian Gonzalez and the New England Patriots continue to discuss a contract extension, and with the regular-season opener Sept. 9 closing in, Gonzalez expressed disappointment that the sides have yet to reach an agreement.

Christian Gonzalez, the Patriots’ 24-year-old cornerback, said he is frustrated with the ongoing contract negotiations but remains focused on the upcoming season.

In his remarks after practice on Tuesday, Gonzalez emphasized his commitment to the team and stressed that his priority is the start of the season.

He noted that the negotiations have lingered for months, yet he maintains optimism that a deal will be finalized.

Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf reiterated that Gonzalez is a top priority for the franchise.

Wolf said the team has increased momentum in talks and has not set a deadline to conclude the agreement, noting that the offer made at the start of training camp still positions Gonzalez as the league’s highest-paid cornerback.

Gonzalez, selected 17th overall in the 2023 draft, is eligible for his first contract extension this offseason. He is currently under contract through 2027, with scheduled earnings of $2.259 million in 2026 and $18.11 million in 2027.
