GAC Group has begun production at its knocked-down (KD) assembly facility in Cambodia’s Kampong Chhnang province, marking a shift from exporting complete vehicles to manufacturing locally.
Under the agreement, TH Group, GAC’s Cambodian partner, is responsible for investment, construction and assembly of the plant, while GAC supplies fully knocked-down (CKD) kits along with technical standards and support.
The facility is designed to produce roughly 10,000 vehicles per year.
GAC has been active in Cambodia for seven years, evolving from vehicle distribution and brand building to now producing vehicles locally.
The project was launched in 2024 and has now reached completion of construction and commencement of production.
In a statement, the Chinese automaker said: “Over the past seven years, from channel development to product rollout, from brand establishment to manufacturing upgrades, GAC has been sharing development opportunities with the Cambodian people through tangible capacity, employment and technology.”
The official opening ceremony was attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin.
Prime Minister Hun Manet called the plant’s launch a “significant achievement” for the government’s industrial transformation, noting it helps Cambodia move from labor‑intensive industries to capital‑ and technology‑intensive sectors, spurs local industrial development, raises the added value of the national economy, and creates new sources of growth.
The company reported that its Trumpchi brand has achieved an average annual compound growth rate exceeding 300% in Cambodia over the past three years since 2024.
GAC recently announced it signed a letter of intent with FAW Group to acquire part of its stake in an as‑yet‑unnamed joint venture with a foreign automaker, widely believed to be Japan’s Toyota Motor.
GAC’s existing joint venture with Toyota, GAC Toyota Motor Company, was established in Guangzhou in 2004, with both parties holding a 50% equity share.
FAW Group’s joint venture with Toyota, FAW Toyota Motor Company based in Tianjin, was formed in 2000, also on a 50‑50 equity basis.
