A former world junior number one and three-time Grand Slam junior champion, Monfils reflects on a career that fell short of major title glory but was filled with moments of pure artistry and entertainment.
Over his 23-season professional career, Monfils captured 13 ATP titles, reached at least the quarterfinals at three of the four Grand Slam tournaments (missing Wimbledon), and achieved a career-high ranking of sixth in the world.
His resume includes 38 victories over top-10 ranked players, including multiple wins against both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, along with two Davis Cup finals with France.
This marked Monfils’ 70th Grand Slam main draw appearance and 19th at the French Open, setting the record for most Slam match wins by a male French player in the Open era.
Despite lacking a major championship, Monfils will be remembered for his electrifying on-court performances, including his signature sliding rallies and gravity-defying shots that made him a fan favorite.
“I was never quite good enough to win a Grand Slam,” Monfils said before the tournament. “But maybe I won something more important than that – a tennis career I’m proud of.”
Tournament director Amélie Mauresmo and legend Henri Leconte were also present for Monfils’ final match against Gaston.
