With Tyson Fury approaching what is likely the final phase of his boxing career, veteran journalist Gareth A. Davies contends that the former heavyweight champion may lack the necessary form to confront the division’s rising generational talents.
Fury is set to return against Mariusz Wach on July 24 in Pattaya, Thailand, followed by an anticipated confrontation with Anthony Joshua later in the year. In his assessment, Davies suggested the 36-year-old Fury should avoid engaging with the sport’s emerging contenders.
“He’s coming up to probably his last couple of fights now in his career and being honest about the fact that he probably hasn’t got enough left to fight a Moses Itauma or some of the young guns coming through the division. Maybe that even includes Daniel Dubois,” said Gareth A. Davies on IFL TV.
Rather than pursuing high-risk matchups with younger athletes, Davies observed that Fury’s attention has turned toward concluding his career with premium events. The two-time heavyweight titleholder, Davies noted, appears settled in Thailand where he has trained extensively and forged connections within the local community.
Davies characterized the Wach engagement as a preparatory bout, highlighting that Fury is already envisioning a meeting with Joshua later this year.
His observations emerge as the heavyweight landscape evolves following Oleksandr Usyk’s relinquishment of his world titles. Meanwhile, 21-year-old prospect Moses Itauma is prepared for his most challenging test against Filip Hrgovic on August 29, with expectations that victory would position him near a world title opportunity.
