Gareth Roderick has put pen to paper on a contract extension with Worcestershire, securing his future at New Road until 2028. The club officially announced the deal on October 9, 2026, celebrating the commitment of their star wicketkeeper-batter.
Since arriving at the county in 2021, Roderick has established himself as a cornerstone of the Worcestershire setup, making 146 appearances across all formats. In 65 first-class matches, he has compiled over 3,000 runs, including seven centuries and twelve half-centuries, alongside effecting more than 200 dismissals behind the stumps. His standout first-class performance includes a career-high 172 not out against Glamorgan in 2022, while his recent form in the 2026 summer was highlighted by a commanding 164 against Northamptonshire. Across List A and T20 formats, he has contributed more than 1,800 runs, boasting three centuries and seven half-centuries.
“Worcestershire is somewhere I have called home for a long while now and it is a place I have made some amazing memories. I have a lot more to give on the field, as a batter and as a wicket keeper, and I am fully committed to giving my absolute best to the Club for as long as I possibly can. It is a great group to be a part of, with a lot of potential and I am excited by that going forward. After a frustrating end to the summer, I am raring to get into next year, keep offering what I can and help the boys challenge on all fronts,” Roderick said in a club statement.
Why is Roderick’s extension significant for Worcestershire?
Roderick’s consistency has been vital for Worcestershire since his arrival in 2021, delivering strong performances with both the bat and the gloves across all formats. His impressive tally of over 3,000 first-class runs and 200-plus dismissals highlights his immense value as a premier county wicketkeeper-batter. Securing his services until 2028 provides a crucial senior presence in the dressing room as the club looks to build for the future. Head Coach Alan Richardson highlighted Roderick’s wider influence on the squad, noting his five-year tenure as a key part of the team’s culture.
“Since arriving five years ago Gareth has become a really important part of our group, as a player but also as a senior figure and a leader. He is someone who is well-respected around the team and represents a lot of our core values, whilst also showing his professionalism on the pitch in the way he goes about his business. Out in the middle he is a fierce competitor, he drives standards at training and is a real asset across all-three formats as a batter and with the gloves. He has a lot more to give and is very motivated, so we are really happy he will be continuing to represent the Club going forward,” Richardson said.
What does the deal mean for Roderick’s time at New Road?
With this new agreement running until 2028, Roderick is set to have spent at least seven years at Worcestershire by the time his contract concludes, cementing his legacy at New Road. His 146 appearances since joining underscore his reliability and consistent selection. Moreover, his strong showing during the 2026 season—including a notable 164 against Northamptonshire—proves he remains highly productive at the crease.
This contract extension firmly establishes Roderick as a long-term cornerstone of the club’s ambitions. While specific details regarding the terms of his previous deal were not disclosed, the new agreement underscores the club’s dedication to retaining their key homegrown talent.
