India head coach Gautam Gambhir stated that Sanju Samson has received clear guidance regarding his role after being omitted from the playing XI, and he did not dismiss the possibility of the wicketkeeper‑batter returning for the remainder of the five‑match T20I series against England. India currently trail the series 0‑2 following two defeats and one washed‑out match.
Speaking after India’s 125‑run loss in the third T20I in Nottingham on Tuesday, Gambhir affirmed that Samson remains within the team’s plans. He noted that Samson has also been excluded from the upcoming Zimbabwe tour squad, adding that selection will be based on current form and results.
Gambhir on Samson’s role
Gambhir remarked, “The clarity that ought to have been given to Sanju Samson has been conveyed to him by me.” He added, “That discussion lies strictly between a head coach and his player, and I will not disclose its details. We are fully aware of Samson’s outstanding contributions to India, particularly during the World Cup. Nevertheless, form must be considered, and there is no fixed rule preventing his return to the side in this series.”
Samson, who earned Player of the Tournament honors at the recent T20 World Cup, lost his spot after managing only 5, 0 and 1 runs in his last three innings — against Ireland and in the series opener versus England. He was replaced by the 15‑year‑old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 31‑year‑old was also omitted from the Zimbabwe squad, with selectors opting for Prabhsimran Singh following his IPL performances with Punjab Kings.
Gambhir emphasized that international cricket is ultimately decided by results, and team selections will continue to favor the combination that offers India the greatest likelihood of victory. He stated, “I have always believed that every player must earn their place and the right to represent India.”
